World's largest cruise ship arrives in Falmouth
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — There are but a few things that fascinates and captures the imagination like a mega-ship. Royal Caribbean's Harmony of the Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship ever built, is one of the most anticipated new cruise ships of 2016, combining all of the great features of the Oasis class ships (Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas) while adding many of the popular features from the Quantum class.
After sailing from Fort Lauderdale in Florida on the Western Caribbean itinerary and spending the day yesterday in Labadee, Haiti, the 16-deck Harmony of the Seas made it's historic inaugural visit to Jamaica arriving for the first time in Port of Falmouth shortly after 9:00am on November 22, 2016.
This makes Harmony of the Seas the largest cruise ship ever to dock in Jamaica, beating the previous Oasis class record holder and sister ship Allure of the Seas by only about 1 foot in length and 2.5 feet in width.
The construction of MS Harmony of the Seas started May 2014 and was delivered two years later making it the 25th ship to join the Royal Caribbean International fleet and the third addition to the Oasis Class fleet.

At 1,187 feet (362 metres) long from bow to stern, the Harmony of the Seas cruise ship is bigger than the Eiffel Tower is tall and holds the record for being the widest cruise ship ever built. This floating city features various pieces of art showcased across the vessel, 20 dining venues, robot bartenders, 7 separate 'neighbourhoods' including a natural park, 23 swimming pools and attractions. Of noteworthy mention on this gigantic beauty is the waterslide named "The Ultimate Abyss" that drops 10 stories from near the top of the vessel down to one of its lowest decks.
The 6,000 passenger cruise ship is so large that it is divided into seven (7) separate neighborhoods:
- Boardwalk
- Central Park
- Pool and Sports Zone
- Royal Promenade
- Vitality Spa
- Entertainment Place
- Youth Zone
Prepare to be entertained as Harmony of the Seas offers the debut of Broadway’s hit musical 'Grease' in the Royal Theater and spectacular diving shows in the AquaTheater. There are also 11,252 works of art showcased throughout the ship and Central Park, a living park in the center of the ship which features a total of 10,587 plants, 48 vine plants and 52 trees, some over 20 feet (6.1 meters) high.
Port of Falmouth will see at least one out of three Oasis Class cruise ship calls every week going into 2017, and with an increasing variety of tour options ranging from sightseeing and nature adventures to adrenaline pumping attractions, staying on board would mean missing out on alot of what this cruise town has to offer. Finding your favorite island dishes in Falmouth is no problem as there are a number of options to choose from. Other ports along the western Caribbean itinerary include Labadee in Haiti and Cozumel in Mexico.
